Schumann and Viardot

About the Event
The Parlour champions the art song tradition, affording a unique glimpse into the people and events that influenced it.
The ensemble searches for the female narrative behind the successes of male artists, often disrupting accepted histories by doing so. Its thrilling recitals merge music and theatre, featuring dramatised vignettes as a backdrop to the music.
Clara Schumann and Pauline Viardot’s friendship began in their late teens and endured as they climbed to the heights of fame, married and became mothers. Today they are remembered primarily as the wives or lovers of famous men, but both were also respected and prolific composers in their time. The Parlour performs a selection of these composers’ beautiful and rarely heard songs and piano solos, highlighting the position of women in the musical arena of the 19th century.
